In the early 1990s, the City of Corpus Christi was ready to tear down the old USO Club on the Corpus Christi bayfront. A group of local artists led the charge to preserve the building and raised funds to locate the Art Center of Corpus Christi in the facility.
The result is now an architectural gem on the city's bayfront which showcases popular works by local and national artists. The Art Center of Corpus Christi is home to 11 arts organizations. In addition to the main gallery, the 14,400-square-foot building houses a main gallery and four studios where artists can be seen working during visitor hours.
The Art Center displays a variety of wonderful work from artists, including watercolors, sculpture and photography. A clay studio encourages artists to complete works-in-progress in front of visitors. Workshops, outreach projects and other events to promote the arts to the public are an integral part of the Art Center of Corpus Christi as well.
The building is located north of Sherrill Park and offers gorgeous views of the bayfront.

Heritage Park & Cultural Center. Visit the 100-year-old Galván House, the national award-winning center that provides a variety of cultural programs throughout the year. This historic attraction is also the site of outdoor festivals, concerts and other activities you won't want to miss.
Located just north of downtown Corpus Christi, Heritage Park transports visitors back in time. Here, turn-of-the-century homes have been relocated and restored to their original condition. The nine homes now are occupied by the offices of non-profit organizations.
Originally, the area was known as 'Irishtown,' until severe damage from the Hurricane of 1919 swept away most of the homes from the area.
Visitors can take a self-guided tour at any time, and can look inside the homes during operating hours of the non-profits that occupy them. Guided tours are also available during the week. Hours are limited, so call ahead.
The enclave of relocated houses tells the story of many well-known families who helped build and steer the city.
The homes include:

  • The McCampbell House - The family nearly perished during the 1919 Hurricane, when floodwaters reached the second-story porch and the occupants were forced into the attic to escape certain death.
  • The Sidbury House - Built and occupied by businesswoman Charlotte Scott Sidbury. She steered a lumber business to great success after her husband's death, and built the home as a rental property to make use of excess lumber inventory. Sidbury became the first woman to sit on the Board of Directors for Corpus Christi National Bank.

Padre Island National Seashore is a pristine swath of more than 133,000 acres of protected, natural beaches. In fact, the National Seashore is the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world.
At Padre Island National Seashore, you'll find a breathtaking environment that showcases Mother Nature in all of her splendor. This pristine land includes white sand dunes, thriving grassland, saltwater marshes and a host of wildlife untouched by development.
The Malaquite Beach entrance is the starting point for many visitors. The area includes a visitor center, picnic area and developed campground.
If you want to experience the island in its natural state, consider a primitive camping experience, which is allowed in any spot along the entire length of the beach.
Off-roaders will enjoy the 55 miles of beach that are accessible only with a four-wheel drive vehicle. Other extremely popular activities include saltwater fishing, hiking and boating.
Year-round inhabitants include coyotes, white-tail deer, peregrine falcons, kangaroo rats, and jackrabbits. The island is also host to an environmentally sensitive dance. Here, endangered Kemp's Ridley and loggerhead sea turtles return to Padre Island to lay their eggs. The hatchlings then must make the death-defying trek to the water, a ritual that is observed every year by environmentalists and others who hope to protect the endangered turtles and help their numbers grow.

The Texas State Aquarium is a major tourist attraction on the Gulf Coast. It attracts more than 500,000 visitors per year and is a leading educational and rehabilitation center that primarily focuses on species from the Gulf of Mexico.
The aquarium opened in 1990, and in 1995 became a federally-permitted animal rehabilitation facility. The Texas State Aquarium adds new permanent exhibits regularly and also rotates temporary exhibits often.
Exhibits explore both creatures of the gulf and the natural habitat that supports them.
Sections of the Texas State Aquarium include:
  • Amazon - Poison dart frogs and piranhas can be found here, along with reptiles and fish
  • Dolphin Bay - A popular attraction where 3 resident bottle-nose dolphins perform breathtaking leaps and tricks. The 400,000-gallon saltwater exhibit includes an enclosed underground viewing area where visitors can sit and watch the dolphins from an underwater perspective.
  • Eagle Pass - This exhibit includes educational shows about the clever raptors that are housed inside. All of the birds have been rehabilitated but are unable to be released in the wild. This is an interactive show that keeps audience members in awe.
  • Floating Phantoms - Jellyfish and nettles from the Gulf of Mexico are on display as 'phantoms of the sea,' where their ghostlike tentacles and bodies are highlighted in darkened displays with intriguing back lighting. They seem to float in thin air.
Other highlights at the Texas State Aquarium include touch tanks, up-close encounters with alligators and a super-sized children's play park.

USS Lexington Museum on the Bay, a World War II aircraft carrier with a storied history. Nicknamed "The Blue Ghost," the maritime vessel includes virtual battle stations and a flight simulator, an IMAX theater and more. Tours of the Bayfront attraction will take you through the different areas of the ship, and some guests even say they can feel the presence of the heroes who fought aboard this historic carrier.
The USS Lexington Museum is a World War II aircraft carrier that now serves as a museum on the Corpus Christi Bay. The storied ship was decommissioned in 1991 after setting more records than any other carrier in U.S. Navy history.
Today the Lexington Museum on the Bay is a showcase for the heroics of sailors, pilots and military personnel who fought for freedom during the war.
Visitors can experience a day in the life of an American soldier in the ship's flight simulator, the virtual battle stations and the 3-story MEGAtheater.
The floating museum features self-guided tours through the ship's maze of tunnels and ladders.
Five self-guided tours cover 100,000 square feet and 11 decks. Sections of the ship that are open to the public include the hangar deck, engine room and sick bay, gallery deck, flight deck, navigation bridge, pilot house and chart house.
Soon after it was commissioned in 1943, the USS Lexington symbolized the perseverance and determination of American troops.
At the time, the USS Lexington was stationed at Pearl Harbor and participated in nearly every major operation in the Pacific. Japanese factions had reported four separate times that the ship had sunk. But each time she returned to fight again, earning the nickname "The Blue Ghost."
During the ship's retirement, new sections of the ship have been restored and opened to the public on a regular basis.
The USS Lexington Museum was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003.

The gardens opened in 1996. Exhibits include conserved native habitat and natural wetlands.
Some of the special displays focus on one type of plant and its many varieties. For instance, the plumeria garden contains more than 100 plants. The Orchid House has over 2,000 orchids. And the rose garden is constructed of 12 raised beds to display all of the spectacular blooms that are coaxed by the expert hands of master gardeners.
Other groupings include the Arid Garden, Water Garden, Sensory Garden, Butterfly Garden, Hummingbird Garden and the shaded Bird & Butterfly Trail.
The 2,500-square-foot Butterfly House gives visitors the opportunity to mingle with fluttering butterflies, who will often stop and rest on an available arm or shoulder.
Adventurous visitors can hike the nature trail through 30 acres of native brush. There you'll see native plants that have adapted to the hard and rugged Texas terrain, as well as deer, javelina, and coyotes.
